wajid ali shah – (1822-1887) The last king of Awadh, a great patron of the arts as well as a noted artist in his own right.
wazan – (lit. “weight”) – 1) In tabla, the weight of the strokes as opposed to delicacy. 2) The use and balance of the formal features of a gazal.
white five – G, so called because it is the fifth white key of the octave on a harmonium.
white four – F, so called because it is the fourth white key of the octave on a harmonium.
white one – C, so called because it is the first white key of the octave on a harmonium.
white seven – B, so called because it is the seventh white key of the octave on a harmonium.
white six – A, so called because it is the sixth white key of the octave on a harmonium.
white three – E, so called because it is the third white key of the octave on a harmonium.
white two – D, so called because it is the second white key of the octave on a harmonium.
whole-step – See “whole-tone”.
whole-tone – One sixth of an octave. This interval is also known as a “major 2nd”, or a “whole step”. It corresonds to the interval between Sa and shuddha Re. In Western music it is fixed at 200 cents, but is highly variable in Indian music. (more info.)
