udaku – See “idakka”.
udakai – See “idakka”.
udatta -One of the three notes of the Rigveda. (more info.)
uday tal – An obscure tal of 12 beats.
udirn tal – An obscure tal of 16 beats.
ukshav tal – A rare tal of 10 beats.
ulta kan – On instruments, it is a backwards way to affect a kan swar (grace note).
umrao jaan – Legendary female entertainer of Lucknow. (more info.)
urdu – One of the two major groups of dialects of Hindustani, the other being Hindi
urumili – A folk drum. (more info.)
ushakiran tal – A rare tal of 16 beats.
ustad – A learned man, a master.
uthan – A cadential form used commonly in dance and tabla solos. This is considered by many to be a type of mukhada used as an introductory piece.
uttarang – The upper tetrachord (i.e., Pa Dha Ni Sa). (more info.)
uttari gunkali – A rare morning rag.
