idakka – A folk drum of S. India. (more info.)
idiophone – Any instrument based upon solid resonators. (e.g., xylophone, bell, andellu, kasht tarang, manjira). (more info.)
ikawai tal – An obscure tal of 16 beats.
iktali – An obscure tal of 11 beats.
immovable note – Achal swar (i.e., Sa and Pa). (more info.)
imrat khan – Noted sitar and surbahar player, who is brother to Vilayat Khan. (more info.)
indore – 1) A place in Northern India famous for the musical arts. 2) A gharana from this area.
indra tal – An obscure tal of 15 beats.
indralin tal – An obscure pakhawaj tal of 11 beats.
indranil tal – An obscure pakhawaj tal of 17 beats.
indri – The cloth and fibre ring cushions upon which the tabla rests.
indwi – See “indri”.
international pitch – An international convention where A above middle C is fixed at 440Hz.
interval – The musical distance between two notes.
israj – See “esraj”.
isthai – See “sthai”
item number – A song/dance segment of an Indian film characterised by a heightened level of eroticism. (more info.)
