Aslam Khan

Mohammed Aslam KhanSarangi Nawaz, is born into a musical family at Hyderabad, AP, India.  His training and musical style is derived from the Kirana and Senia gharanas, of North Indian music.  He began his musical training at the age of 15 under his father Ustad Sayeed-ur-Rahaman Jigar, Sarangi Nawaz, who is a staff artist in All India Radio, Hyderabad.  After a number of years under his father, he started tutelage under the great sarangi master Padma Bhushan, Ustad Sabri Khan of Delhi.  He has been under the tutelage of Sabri Khan Sahib for several years now.

The sarangi is an instrument that is peculiar to the North Indian system of music.  It is a bowed instrument with approximately 35 strings.  It was at one time a ubiquitous instrument for the accompaniment of vocalist, but during the 20th century it became nearly extinct.  Today, there is a resurgence in interest in this instrument.  Aslam Khan is a young artist who is at the forefront in the renaissance of the art of sarangi playing.

Aslam Khan has an extensive list of professional accomplishments.  Along with his Ustad Sabri Khan and his son Kamal Sabri, Aslam Khan has been on an I.C.C.R. sponsored tour in 2007.  This tour took him to China, Japan, and Hong Kong.  He has also performed in Germany, England, Singapore, and Dubai.  He has performed on an album released by “Music Today” entitled “Dance of the Desert” which also contains Kamal Sabri, and Suhail Yousuf Khan.  He has performed extensively across India.  He has performed in Delhi, Bombay (Mumbai), Bangalore, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Lucknow as well as his native Hyderabad.  He has also performed on All India Radio as well as Hyderabad Doordarshan.
