Swetha Subramanian is a New York–based vocalist who performs under the name Sweta. Trained in Carnatic classical music under Vidwan Sri Guruvayur Radhakrishnan in Bengaluru and in Indian film and light music under Sri Badari Prasad, her work spans classical, cinematic, and contemporary performance contexts.
As a performer, she has worked with established live production houses in India and has collaborated on Indian film music projects with nationally recognised composers, reaching wide audiences through live performance and recorded media.
Among her recent projects is a concert series that explores Indian film music through a raga-first way of listening—examining how classical melodic systems continue to shape familiar songs across Hindi and regional cinema. Rather than treating film music as separate from classical practice, this work focuses on listening: how raga grammar, phrase structure, and melodic contour operate within well-known melodies, often in subtle ways.
Now based in New York, Swetha’s work also emphasises intimate, community-oriented performance formats that encourage attentive listening. Through performance and writing, she aims to make Indian classical and film music more accessible to diverse audiences, without requiring prior technical training.
