Comments – This is an example of a song pulling in one direction, while the interludes pull in a different one. The song sticks very close to Shivaranjani, but almost from the onset, the interludes pull in other directions. About half way through the song, the vocalist also begins to wander away from Shivaranjani. These deviations start with ornamentation of notes with non-Shivaranjani elements, but very quickly move into the main melody.

There are several elements to be cognisant of. To begin with there is the use of both komal and shuddha Ga. As mentioned elsewhere, this usage is so common that today we really should consider this to be a part of Shivaranjani. However, there is a very noticeable usage of komal Ni; this is not at all admissible in this rag. Does this enhance or detract from the song? I will not weigh in on this one, but let the listener decide.

Comments – This is not a good example of Shivaranjani.  This contains a lot of non-Shivaranjani elements which have been thrown in for no discernible reason.  Although mixing rags is the norm in the films, this case seems to show a particular lack of skill, or musical understanding.

Comments – This is from an old Pakistani film.

It is really a pretty good example of a contemporary interpretation of Shivaranjani, that is to say that there is mixing of other elements, but with the exception of some interludes, it is within modern interpretations of the rag.

Comments – This is somewhat mixed even by filmi standards.  This is not the best film song to listen to if you are trying to get a handle in Shivaranjani

Comments – This is inspired by Shiaranjani but it definitely is not. I thought long and hard as to whether I should include this song in the list. It starts off with a completely strong Shivaranjani in the ascending sections. But in the descending sections, it just goes all wrong. I am hesitatingly classifying this here, but it is just too wrong for the student to even consider this when trying to wrap their mind around this rag.

Comments – Just where did Shabir Kumar get the idea that he could sing?  Perhaps he inhabits some alternative universe? Structurally it seems to be a fairly standard Shivaranajani.
