Comments – This piece clearly shows one of the major difficulties in analysing film music. Classical musical performances invariably have a drone which clearly shows the tonic of any song. Conversely, film songs rarely have this drone. This forces the listener to infer the tonic from various structural or melodic characteristics.

Unfortunately, correctly inferring the tonic in this manner is not always easy, or even possible. The five pentatonic rags of the Bhupali class are a case in point. These five rags are linked, not by their basic thats, but by a process of modulation known as murchhana, Simply put, murcchana is a process of changing the structure of a scale by shifting the tonic.

We have looked at this song and decided to classify it under Palasi; this seems to be the “best fit”. However other respected musicians have looked at it and have chosen to apply a different tonic, thus reaching different conclusions. In particular Malkauns is sometimes mentioned.

It is not a question of “who is right”, because multiple valid opinions exist in the face of this fundamental ambiguity.
