Anoushka Shankar is a noted exponent of the Indian sitar. She is a student, and daughter of the legendary Ravi Shankar.
She was born in London in 1981, and spent her early years shuttling back and forth between London and New Delhi. She gave her debut performance in New Delhi at the tender age of 13. Later, she moved to Encinitas, CA, where she graduated from High School with honours in 1999.
Anouskha has an impressive performing and recording career. She regularly accompanied her father in performances; this she did for quite a few years. In 1998, she released her first solo album, “Anoushka”, followed shortly by “Anourag”. Two years later, she released the Grammy nominated “Live at Carnegie Hall”. She has since released numerous albums, and won numerous Grammy Awards. Her stage career is very extensive, for she has performed in most of the world’s major venues.
She has collaborated with numerous musicians. These include such greats as Herbie Hancock, Sting, and Joshua Bell.
Anoushka Shankar’s career is not limited to music. In 2002 she published a book entitled “Bapi, The Love of My Live”; this is a pictorial biography which pays special tribute to her father, Ravi Shankar. She has also acted in films; in 2003 she acted in the film “Dance Like a Man”, where she plays a young Bharat Natyam dancer.
In 2010 she married the British filmmaker Joe Wright. They have two children, Zubin Wright and Mohan Wright. Anoushka and her husband separated in 2017 and divorced in 2019.
