when to strike the second string? Feb 24, 2004 10:54 a.m.

I have a technical playing question:
If you strike the main string you can also play the second string at the same.
1) when do you this, only in jor and jhala or also in the tanas?
2) how do you prevent that the second string becomes to loud, ecspecially with a Ra stroke.

I have listened to some recordings of different players and they seem to be doing this in different ways.
I hope someone can give me some advise.

This is something that I wondered about as well. It is much more common in the Vilayat Khan school of playing. The sitar players in that school can be very aggressive in striking the SA string during Jod and on fast runs. I for one, prefer this approach. You wont hear it as much from the Ravi Shankar school of playing.
