on that site, all the audio is in .ram files, which don't seem to play for me. What kind of files are they, and what codec(s) are required?

Just crab RealOne Player, you find by googeling.
Be sure to take the demo version, otherwise you have to pay for it.
It will play the .ram format from that site.
