Very Sad News Mar 03, 2004 08:49 a.m.

Copied from Google newsgroup <rec.music.indian.classical> Mar.3, 2004:

"Apparently, Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib collapsed on Sunday and was
admitted to hospital. He has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer,
and is presently unconscious. He gains consciousness for a few minutes
and then lapses into a daze again. Sons Shujaat and Hidayat are with
him, and close family members such as brother Ustad Imrat Khan are on
their way to be with Vilayat Khan Sahib for what appears to be his
last days.

I am assuming "Terminal Lung Cancer" does not mean "end stage Lung
Cancer", although the report I have heard is chararcterising Ustad
Vilayat as being in his last days.

I can only hope and pray, and would hope all lovers of Indian
Classical Music will join me in wishing and praying that Ustad Vilayat
Khan Sahib spends whatever time he has in comfort, peace, tranqility
and freedom from suffering."

This is very sad! I do hope he does not go through a long stretch of pain and suffering. . .

I have been listening to him alot lately and I am such a big fan of all he has done for this instrument we all love!

I'm wondering who posted this on the group, though I wouldn't be surprised if it was already general knowledge in India. It is quite bad (stage IV), and I hope he is not in any pain. I learned of the tragic situation late sunday and arranged for my teacher NK to fly to India the next day. I have not heard anything new today from Khansahab so I'm hoping he is still hanging on to see his brother and nephew.

He is truly one of the great masters and we are all so fortunate he has so beautifully shared his music and life with the world for so many years.

As far as I am aware he hasn't passed yet. Let us hold on to the hope that by some miracle the Ustad may yet recover.

I'm really curious how you can make the claim that the complete family has gathered. Imrat Khan is sceduled to play in Cologne, Germany tomorrow. I've contacted the venue if the concert will take place and they say he will perform. It's a 5-6 hour journey and wanted to be sure not to make the trip invain. Still. .I wonder how I would be perform under these circumstances. . .All very sad. . .

Peace,

Remco

I got this email from the organizers:

the management of the Khans confirmed that Vilayat Khan is ill, but nevertheless the concert tomorrow will take place. WITH Imrat Khan.

We wish you a good trip to Kln and a nice concert!

Strangely none of this news is on the Indian Television News channels or newspapers.
Vilayat Khan Ji is a highly regarded musician in the indian classical music circle. even some of the musicians knowing him well in delhi dont know about this.

peace. .

It could be that the television news channels and newspapers are being unusually respectful of the family's wishes. (I don't know if this is common in India?)

Our thoughts are with them and the ailing Ustad.

Ustad Vilayet Khan Sahab has cancer in the liver and lungs. He is now at a hospital in Mumbai. This is confermed to be the true and official version straight from the source. .

may the angels cry, and the stars fall down. .
