Hi,
I have a couple of questions about sitar mantainence and was wondering if you guys knew something about this before I go out and do something I'm not supposed to.

I have a second had sitar which sounds great except that some of the eyelets of the sympathetic strings are cracked at the place where the string touches it, lowering the string and making it buzz along the wood. Is there some way to correct this eg, by putting some sort of cover or bead over the cracked eyelet?

What sort of wood polish can one use for the wooden parts of the sitar? Mine is sort of a light green color.

What sort of chalk can one use for setting in the pegs?

Also, can anyone recommend where I can buy or mail order spare strings. I live in Munich, Germany.

Thanks in advance,
Farhad.

Hi,

When I bought my surbahar last month, the previous owner (who lives in South Germany), advised me to buy strings from the following company:

Jahn GmbH
Coburger Str. 43
D 96271 Grub am Forst
Tel: 09560 98120
Fax: 09560 1734

You can probably buy rolls of string (a lot cheaper) but you'll have to know the gauges

But you can also buy from http://www.india-instruments.de/

Good luck

Hi Farhad,
I use superglue on the cracked eyelets and smooth them over with a tooth pick or something. I fill in the grooves in them with it as well.

Get some wax-free chaulk from the hw store. Feel it first and make sure it is really gritty.
