imrat khan's raag desh, what a nice sounding sitar Aug 24, 2003 02:19 p.m.

Hi,
I downloaded raag desh from Patrick Moutal's site and I can't believe how big the sound is from Imrat Khan's sitar! What is it that make it sound so good? Big gourd? Aged wood? Good jawari? (transducers?).

Hey Pb,

It could very well be a surbahar that he is playing. .

Hey Neal,
I think the surbahar is on the stage in front of him. It sounds like no other sitar I have heard (which is not all that many). I hear that sound in my sleep now :-)

I couldn't view the video but could hear the audio. Sounds like he has 2/5ths of the "fifty fingers" adding to his performance with sarod and tabla. Typically, the Khan family are partial to Hiren Roy, Co. for their stringed instruments.

Hey Stephen,
can you install Quick Time? In my case I installed xine for unix/linux. Imrat K, a sarode player and a tabla player are there. The sitar is quite nice, big tomba. The sound of it completly overpowers the sarode. Try just downloading the movie and opening it from the file->open in QT player. It is a nice video.

Actually the sarode player as well as the tabla player are his sons. Imrat Khansaheb has 4 sons, the 2 who are playing (Wajahat on the sarode and Shafaatullah on the tabla) are his 2 youngest. His other 2 sons are Ustad Nishat Khan and Ustad Irshad Khan.

Cool, so that would be 3/5ths of the 50 fingers after all. I couldn't remember the names of the other musicians. I have some irshan and nishat khan cds. Maybe the sound difference is just the way the microphones are set up, more for daddy :-)

I have some by Imrat and Irshad as well. In my opionion, Irshad may be better at sitar than his dad, but the surbahar is definitely Imrat's claim to fame.

Hey Russ,
I think you are right. Irshad is better than his dad at sitar, but not better than his uncle. Does Vilayat play surbahar?

Don't know. Never heard of it. . . .

Yes, Irshad is wonderfull on sitar, but I am not to impressed with his Surbahar playing, it just lacks the expression, and you can hear him slip quite a bit in the few recordings of him in surbahar.

Never heard Irshad's surbahar playing, but I know he has done some on CD. Well, even though a surbahar looks like a sitar on steroids, they are two different instruments, played with different styles. There are a number of people who play both, but they usually excell on one, not both. I recall Raviji began his career on surbahar, but after hearing his then-wife play, he gave that path up. She was very much better, and he realized he could not come up to her standard. But he seemed to take to sitar technique better, and the rest is history.

It is a shame there is no recordings of Smt. Annapurna Devi, she must be spectacular, I mean all of her disciples are wonderfull, especially Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.

I have heard that some of her playing was recorded on reel to reel tape long ago by a student. But she is a recluse and unfortunatley does not want her music published. So, those tapes are locked away.

Yeah, it is a shame she is still a recluse. But you have to remember in India's social structure a divorce is pretty much the same this as being a widow, so thats the life she has chosen to live. I never will forgive Raviji for doing such a shamefull thing to her without warning or care.

Divorce used to be a big deal here too, but I guess those days are over. Well, nobody's perfect. I can't understand why Raviji would abandon his second daughter Norah Jones like he did. Taking a little responsibility would be in order. But finally after long last he has accepted Norah, and they have become much closer.

This is from an interview on www.norahjones.info

So, your dad is Ravi Shankar?

It bothers me that people dwell on it, but whatever. I don't really care and usually people get it wrong so it pisses one of my parents off, but it shouldn't be an issue because it's got nothing to do with my music and that's the only reason you should be talking to me. Everything else doesn't really matter.

I knew that if people knew, they'd pick on it. It's something that interests people which is fine. It's just none of their business. My statement is that I love my dad and I respect his music. He's a wonderful musician, he just doesn't have anything to do with my music and he never did. I'm not saying he's a bad person, but I didn't grow up around him and that's it. You're not going to get beyond that.

It must be cool to have a famous parent though?

I guess it is. I've had my own issues with it, but I'm not really round him enough to see that side of this. It's cool because he's a good person and he's my dad, so I don't know that it's cool that he's famous maybe [laughs].

Living in her area, there was a local feature on her many months ago, where she seemed to be ok about her dad, but maybe that was her on-air persona?
