sitar players in wv and string recommendations Aug 16, 2003 10:08 p.m.

I am a beginning sitar player and am looking for anyone to jam with in the charleston, beckley, ashland KY or huntington area. Also, could someone please recommend a good set of sitar strings - when I tried to tune this one i broke two of the main strings and one sympathetic string.

Hey,
you can order strings from http://www.sitarsetc.com or from http://www.fortepiano.com. I bought a bunch of bulk spools from fortepiano several months ago and I have strung 4 sitars with what I would pay for one set pre cut, and I still have a lot more left. Try the Roeslau strings.

Repeat of the same information, but it still needs to be stressed. . Go to www.fortepiano.com they offer some really nice wire, you will need the following for your sitar if you decide to order from them. . .

Roeslau Music Wire
.008"
.009"
.010"
.011"
.012"

Phosphor Bronze Wire
.016"
.022"
.028"

Why so many different kinds of steel? Well as a beginner you still should be entitled to find what gauge works best for you, and also for the tarabs I reccomend .011" for the lowest one, .010" for the next two, and .009" for the remainder of them, thats where the .011" comes in handy. Initially this may seem expensive, but believe me, if you keep the stuff in a moisture proof enviorment, if could possibly last a lifetime depending on how much you plan on using.
