The string broke on one of my frets, what do I do?

First off I'd like to give a big hello to everyone, this is my first post on this forum.
I'm fairly new to playing sitar so I hope I don't annoy w/ all the stupid questions I'll probably ask.
To get to the point;
The string that holds one of my frets broke. I'm not sure how to fix it. Where can I get the right string? Is it possible to find something that will work in a local store? I don't really care if it matches or not.
Also any tips on how to retie it would be much appriciated.

Welcome. Well, fret retying is one of the hardest sitar-maintenance items I've ever had to do, and I'm still not good at it. The Silverbush website has a good step by step diagram on how to do it. I also have used plastic fishing line as a substitute for cord. Doesn't look cool, but it works. Good luck!

Hello,
Welcome to the board. . . . .!! You can get the traditional silk thread or use a rayon/nylon thread. I got a roll from Buckingham music. It's much stronger. . . . .the diagram at Silverbushmusic.com is the best way to do it as Russ said. . . .if you can't find it there, I can email the picture to you. . . .make sure you get it nice and tight, have a helper if possible. . .

Hello there. .It's always good to hear that sitar strings and fret cords are being broken!!. .It shows that you are indeed practising your sitar. .THE worst case senario is that oyu leave the sitar in the corner and never break any strings!!. .welcome to the club. .and fishing line has served me well for many years. .regards mash.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone!
I think I'll try fishing line until I can get an order together for Buckingham Music. Six dollars a roll isn't too bad, and I think they said that's enough for thirty frets or so. So it should last a while. I think I need to get some larger mizrabs also because the ones they sent w/ my instrument make my finger hurt.

Mizrabs are supposed to hurt
That's why they call them Mizrab(le). . . . . . .the 2 pointed ends should fit in below the first joint with about 1/4" of the tip extended from your finger. Over time you'll develop bumps where it anchors on your finger, best way to get them fast is to play long enough where you get blisters and 2 weeks later you'll have a couple of nice callouses!
