Where do you live? It would be best to find a good teacher. There are some good books too but to get the best from them you should first learn from someone. If there are no teachers near you then you could try an online teacher of which there is only one that I know of. . . . . .

For a good basic primer on how to tune up and play all the strings in the major scale, including some of the traditional playing techniques (hand strokes), best source I found is Ashwin Batish's video sitar tutor, part I. Kind of expensive to buy new, but I see it on Ebay now and then for about $20. I don't know. Books are OK, but I've always learned best by seeing and hearing, and that's where video shines. Of course if you can snag a teacher, well. . . . . .
