Kanthe Maharaj Bio? Feb 23, 2004 09:28 a.m.

Hi,

I am trying to find a short bio of Pt Kanthe Maraj but with no much success really. Can any one point me to a site or provide one here on this site ?

One of the questions for this year Prayag Sangit Samiti third year examinations requires you to write a short essay in either one of the two following artist:

Ahmed Jan Thirakwa and Kanthe Maharaj.

I have found for Thirakwa-ji (thanks to Jeff who created a page/bio on this site) but can't find anything for Maharaj-ji.

thanks in advance

Shawn

Please let me know if you find anything else.

Take care,

Dear Rod,
I doubt you'll get much on the internet alone - you may have to look for a few books. My recommendations are:

Aban Mistry's Pakhawaj & Tabla: History, Schools and Traditions available at:
http://www.tabla.com/store/digitala/

Shepherd, Frances A.
1976 "Tabla and the Benares Gharana". Wesleyan University. University Microfilms International. (Ph.D. Dissertation).

This one you'll have to really search for. Try your local or nearest University library and ask how an individual can obtain a copy of a Ph.D. Dissertation. I know it's possible for a small fee, but it's been a while so I've forgotten the details. In the meantime I'll try doing a little research myself. Anyway while you're at it get a copy of Rebecca M.Stewart's Ph.D. Thesis, "The Tabla in Perspective". , Ann Arbor. 1974
All good references and worth the time and cost to obtain for this assignment and future ones.
You should also ask Shawn:
shawn@percussionist.net - he has a nice page on Benares Gharana but only a photo of the subject you're seeking at present.
Be prepared to publish your findings here - we don't give this kind of advice for free! :-)

Shawn,
Have you asked Jim Kippen if he has anything on Pt. Kanthe Maharaj ? I know he's heavy into Lucknow G. but he's also a great resource and an all-around nice guy and I believe he's in Toronto (?) Would be a nice addition to your wonderful wpage.

There's a great photo of a very young Kanthe Maharaj and sarangist Gopal Mishra on the cover of Martin Clayton's "Time and Indian Music" - Oxford University Press, 2000. I own have a scanner, or I'd try to post it.

I would have thought that Kishen Maharaj would have had much to say about his teacher -you should also look in that vicinity. Maybe one of Kumar Bose's students could inquire with him about any extant Kanthe Maharaj bios.

. .Just a couple of more thoughts.

Aanaddha, I haven't been much in touch with James Kippen, but I'll see about asking him.

Rod - I remember that Guruji had this great book (in Hindi) with bios on ALL the Benares artists from all the various instruments (tabla, sitar, etc. .). Would be nice if someone fluent in Hindi translated it, at least partially. .

Take care

Thanks Shawn,

I will ask him when he gets back. I am learning Hindi myself and although I am nowhere near being proficient in it, I could perhaps try to translate some myself. I look forward doing that. .

Rod,
Since you know Frances, perhaps you could inquire if she has ever had any intention of publishing her disertation. I, for one, would love to own a bound copy as it is as great a read and re-read as it is a resource. Tell her for me that her work is still very much appreciated even thirty years after it was written!

Hi Annaddha,

I doubt that Frances will be publishing her dissertation, or else she would have already done it. . However, you can order a bound copy from UMI at this address:

Hi Shawn, Rod,
Thanks, man, it takes some persistence to navigate that site but I managed to find the reference numbers to both dissertations. You will need these numbers to order the copy from UMI.

younger and older Ahmed Jaan Thirakwa,
Anokhelal Misra, Amir Husein Khan, Allarakkha, Aabid Husain Khan, Pt Kanthe Maharaj, Karaamatulla Khan, Gami Khan, Jahangir Khan, Zakir Hussain, Nanthu Khan, Nikhil Ghosh, Pandarinath Naageshkar, Biru Miksha, Masit Khan, Munir Khan, Mehabub Khan Mirajakar, Pt Ram Sahai, Lalji Shrivastav, Haji Vilaayat Ali, Sheik Daaood, Samtaa Prasad Mishra, Lakshmanarav Parvatiikar, Habibuddin Khan, Amir Khusro,

+ Pakhawaj players.
+ lots of compositions.

Great treasure I never knew I had!! Time to start thinking about reading and translating them.
