Hi all,

Do you anything about `Tabla with Pt. Shankar Ghosh`- video and booklet- which was advertised on this site a few weeks ago? Does it include compositions for advanced students or mainly for beginners? I`d just like to know if it`s worth buying or not.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is "DVD PAL"?
Will it play on any DVD player?
Thanks,

OK, thanks for the info, but are there only compositions for beginners on it?

It has a couple of kaidas and relas, laggi, gat, few tukras and a chakradar. One rela has dhenegene in it and one basic rela with dheredhere. Kaidas involve phrases like tetegege, kredhatete, terekete and
dha-tereketetakaterekete. Fixed compositions are in Purab baj.
In the beginning there is a documentary, where Shankar Ghosh tests few tablas and some footage from manufacturing of tabla. Bikram Ghosh also plays a little bit of kanjira there and a short clip of a duet: Shankar and Bikram Ghosh. Shankar Ghosh accompanies a couple of songs there.
Shankar Ghosh demonstrates technical aspects of playing very well. Not anything too difficult there, but everything is difficult if you play it well.

With regards to DVD PAL, PAL is the European television standard. So, this DVD will not work in North America. The North American standard is called NTSC.

Though. . usually DVDs are actually universal, but contain a 'region code' that prevents a CD from Europe being played in North America or vice versa. . and the DVD player decodes the information and displays it the right way. . some DVD players don't have this region code verification, and some DVDs (especially from Asia) are made without the region code. .

The best thing would be for you to just ask the store that you're buying it from whether or not it will work wherever you are.

Take care,

Shawn

Dear M.
Did you ever purchase this video. I'm curious about your estimation of it? Is it worth the price? (45 euros)

Hi Aanaddha,
Unfortunately I have not bought the video because I found it a bit pricey, so I do not know if it is worth purchasing or not.
