Maybe I should add I have been a bass player for 30 years both electric and upright, so I am not learning an instrument for the first time, musical chops or playing to rhythyms. In fact, I would say my skills at bass have transfered very well to the sitar. . .
Maybe this won't change my reply level but I figured I should include this info. .
Me,too. I am looking for some "raga-player".
But here in Okinawa,a small isolated island between Taiwan and mainland Japan,it seems very difficult. .
If you have a chance to visit Okinawa,I love to meet you!
Hi Jay,
Here's a list of folks who teach in the Mass. area. Don't be shy dude. Call around and speak to teachers and tell them you are looking for a tabla player who wants the same as you do. Teachers are generally happy to have their students practice with other musicians as it improves their learning curve and makes for a much more rewarding teacher-student relationship. Don't just limit yourself to playing with tabla players - there are some killer pakwaj and khol players out there that can throw you some very interesting grooves that can take your music to different places.
