What can I do before going to Calcutta? May 26, 2003 03:46 a.m.

Hello, everyone.
I am a complete beginner, going to study tabla in Calcutta this autumn.
Referring to some internet-sites and books, by myself, I tried to remember bols and to know how to use fingers.
I know this is against the rule of Indian music but I WANT to start practicing now in Japan.
One said that I should not remember anything before I saw a teacher.
Then, what can I do, except for pushing a play switch of a stereo?

Or, if you think it is no problem for me to study by myself till September, answer these questions, please.
1. tag means ta and ga? kit means ka and te?
2. trk is played by the tempo of 1:1:1, or played just speedy and taken a little interval ? Using ring finger and middle finger and index finger of the right hand?
3. dheteta is played by the tempo of 1:1:1, or 2(dhe): 1(te): 1(ta), or 1(dhe): 1(te): 2(ta)?
How about detetag?

Any advice or information will please me.
Thank you.

My advice would be. .
if you have the patience wait for your teacher, books can be very misleading, they are too ambiguous in my opinion. as a teacher i have had to spend considerable time repairing damage of students who have started with books and developed bad habits.
maybe have a look at a couple of videos (Shankar ghosh, Yogesh samsi)
best wishes for your trip to Calcutta, and hope you find a good teacher (have you got a teacher arranged?)

Thank you for replying me, Nickala.
I understand that misunderstandings will take me much more time to learn that instrument.
I decide to stop studying by my self.

I just decided to go to Calcutta to learn a tabla and don't have a certain teacher yet.
If you know good one, tell me please.
Or, where do you teach it?

I don't know any teachers in calcutta personally, i would suggest that you try to get a teacher who you are going to be able to spend a lot of time with, this is important in the early stages in my humble opinion, first is to get your technique right.
Problem with 'big' artists is that they have an heavy schedule,it's not always easy to get time with them, maybe later you can take guidance from international stars, there must be many very good teachers in calcutta, who will give you some intensive period of tuition, if i come across any reccommendations i will certainly let you know.
