Vish ,
Check some of the older messages on this forum, people have submitted a lot of information on similar
questions. Unfortunately we may have lost some of these after the server crash. But I think there are still a few messages with bols for you.

Vish,
I have learnt bhajani theka from my guru Uday Kangutkar.
In the typical Marathi style of playing bhajani theka (listen to Bhimsen's Bhajan CD's as a classic example), the following tradition is used:
dhi - na dhi - dhi na- dhi - na tin -tin na - (traditional)
tite tata tite tata tite tata -ta ta- single speed (prelude to singer coming back to main line)
dha tin ta da ta tin dha da (repeat) in double speed (laggi) (singer on main line)
dhin - - na ti te dhin - na ti te dhin - na ti te dhin (sam) (tihai)
back to bhajani theka
Simple as the above appears, to play this pattern with good sound and clarity and rhythm has been a struggle for a beginner like me !!! Have been practicing this for the past 2 years !
Finally, dadra in bhajans is relatively rare but you can play the following:
dha tin tin ta dhin dhin (prakar)
dha tik dhin gin na na dha tik tin ki na na (repeat laggi)

Hey Parag say hello to Uday, last time I saw him he performed with Aashish Khan in Austin.
Also not sure about how your beats are seperated , is it one bol or dash per matra?
If not can you seperate each matra with a comma?

Warren,
Each of the dashes correesponds to a pause. For example: Main Bhajani Theka is as follows:
Dhi - Na Dhin -Dhin Na - Dhin - Na Tin - Tin Na -
There should be 16 bols (including 6 pauses) in the above prakar that will be played in 8 beats (kaherva).
The Da of the laggi is played as a Ta.
I have listened to several semi-classical bhajan CDs by such greats as Bhimsen, Ajoy Chakravarty, Roop Kumar Ratod etc and this pattern is played amost 90% of the time.
I will mention you to Uday. He has been like a younger brother to me over the past 5 years or so as well as my guru. If I was more rhythmically gifted, I would have been accompanying him by now !
Best Regards to you and all of our friends on this wonderful site that David has set up !!!
