Hallo everybody, how can you see if a phrase is a Rela or a Kaida? What is the difference between the characteristics of a Rela and a Kaida? Thanks for all the information on this great forum.

Hi wayan, im not an expert but from my experience i can tell u that there is not a lot of difference. each palta in a kaida in played in the bhari then the khali and the last line of each variation seems to be the same. this is true of a rela as well but the thing that i have notice is that the bols in a rela seem tp be very simple and have a lot of phrases such as tirakita, dhina gina, and dhira dhira. this is one of the biggest differences that i have noticed

That's right , my understanding is that the rela sort of became like the kaida. Originally it started as a composition. Originally many compositions were written as pieces that demonstrated something.
Rain composition, tiger composition, festival compositions. Rela was one of these compositions demonstrating the train. {actually rela origin is another one of those highly debateable items in the tabla realm}
As Kaidas became popular the rela inherited most of the rules of the kaida. [ The rules of the kaida are 1.The theme is played which is a fixed composition of bols.
2. The theme will be played and then a kali version of the theme will follow as well as a kali version of each palta will always follow each palta.
3. The kaida has an improvisational stage wich is called the Palta. * Each palta created must only use the bols alotted in the theme. And each palta must rhyme, in other words must end with the same bols or group of bols that were used in the original theme. {*Note for most of us we don't improvise the paltas to much because they are many paltas that have become as traditional as the theme therefore it becomes good structure to play the traditional paltas which are passed down with the theme}
4. The kaida will end with a tihia based on the theme. This is probably the newest aspect of kaida, tihias and chakradars have become more popular over the past 50 to 100 years. Originally tihias were not as important and many very old recordings of tabla solos did not have as many tihias. Kaidas simply ended and went on to the next.

But anyway the primary aspect of the rela is that it is written to be played fast whereas a kaida should sound good slow or fast. The rela will have more of the bols as Jilly already explained.
