this is a great excercise to build your bayan hand from Gyan Prakash Ghosh. Anindo da plays it on Anindo and his Tabla-teental.

Hey Rob,

That looks like a good one. Thanks.

Question about fingering.

Does Anindoji play this starting with the middle finger or with the forefinger? I ask because I am learning that with Benarasi techique, any double bayan strike begins with the forefinger.

Regards

2 being the middle and ring finger , 1 being the first. It is 2 1 2 1 2 1etc. this is very important because when you play very fast on the Kali section your ke ke is played 2 1 also . Think of it like playing dhere with the left hand

I didn't know that using second and then first vs. first and then second fingers was a distiction between gharanas.

I'm not sure that it is. I play Benares gharana as well, but I have seen both used for fast passages. . 2,1 or 1,2. I think it depends a bit on context and your guru's preferences (as well as your own).

A nice Benares Tukra:

Ka-TeTe GiGiTeTe KaTaKaTa GiGiTeTe
KaTaGiGi TeTeKaTa GiGiTe- Dha-GiGi
Te-Dha- GiGiTe- Dha---

(play the whole thing 3 times to land on sam)

(Ta = Te, Dha = Na+Ge LAO (sur))

I play the GiGi with middle finger, then 1st finger (2,1).

Have fun with it!
