Aluminium or Nickle Plated ? Sep 24, 2002 05:46 p.m.

Hello. I have just bought a tabla set. I'm not sure if they are nickel plated brass , or aluminium. (the bayan has a shiny silver surface anyway - I'm guessing it's one of these)

Does anyone know of a way I can tell what material my bayan is made from ?

Warm Regards

Hi,

Aluminium is very light, and a plated drum will be quite heavy, similar in weight to the tabla (wooden drum).

Also, you can hit the small round base of the baya and hear if it makes a metallic 'ping' sound, which is an indication of copper or brass (which is what is under the plating).

Also, a plated drum will be shiny, and aluminium tends to be a more matte-silver colour.

Hope this helps,

Shawn

Shaun -

Thanks for that - I'm 99% sure that my drum is plated.
