What is this drum called? May 19, 2002 03:36 a.m.

Hi all,
Being a sitar player I don't usually post over here but I saw Zakir and the Masters of Percussion tonight and was really blown away! What is the name of the little drum made out of lizard skin, I think it's from South India? Also does anyone know where to get a recording of those guys?? Thanks in advance. . .

Its name is Kanjira (the south Indian frame drum).

Do you like to have a Kanjira?

Ask Prafulla: www.tabla-player.com

There was recently a ban put on the lizard skin used to make these drums, since this lizard is now an endangered species. I believe Selvaganesh may have cornered the remaining market (heard he bought up hundreds of these drums after hearing the news).

Is it possible to still get a real kanjira anywhere? Also, are they making kanjira out of anything else now?

I am not a kanjira expert, but Latin Percussion has kanjiras. John Bergamo if I remember correctly has been part of the LP kanjira project. I can't say anything about those kanjiras, but to go to those pages. I've been surfing the net and I believe if you use a search engine you'll find other kanjiras also. Kanjira is a beautiful instrument especially when Harishankar plays it!!
