Which part of your index finger do you play the na/ta tin etc. . ?

Im just starting so bear with me.

my teacher says the first digit of the finger (i.e. the part with your fingernail) when you play na/ta further back on the finger a callous (sp?) will begin to develop which will mess everything up.

sorry it's hard for me to explain things clearly
look at you hand. the part of your index finger furthest from the palm (i.e. the first digit of the finger) is what should strike the tabla. if you've ever gotten fingerprints taken it's that same part of the finger.
