I've just recently purchased a tabla and am eagerly looking for an instructor to learn proper methods of tuning, postioning, playing, etc. I do play other types of hand drums, but this seems like a whole different world. I live in Connecticut, can anybody help?

Hey Jer.
I also live in CT, and I have posted the same question as you, and I got the same responses. We just have to accept that one-on-one tabla instruction is next to impossible to find in N.E., except for Boston. Where in CT do you live? I'm at UConn in Storrs.
In the meantime, I very highly recommend David Courtney's book Fundamentals of Tabla. It has taught me much. Otherwise, immerse your ears in the sound of great tabla players. As I'm sure you know, regular listening does wonders for instrumental development. I'll keep an ear open for local instruction and let you know. Glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem. .

Ray,
Thanks for the reply. I live in Bristol. I did order that book already. I'm self taught at a few different instruments already so I'm hoping I'll be able to do the same with tabla. I'll definately let you know if I find anyone though. How long have you been playing?
