I was thinking of taking up the tabla, but there really isn't any close by places where I can get taught. I don't really know to much about it either. Do you think I would be able to teach myself to play it or not. I hear it takes lots of time to learn.
Where do you live? I used to think there was no place around me to learn, but I bought tabla anyway and kept learning and looking for a teacher, and I finally found one. i learned slowly with videos and recordings, a teacher helps alot.
If you can't find a teacher then get a couple of videos and DO get the Swarshala software. . .and tablas of course!
You should be able to get the basics with that.
If u really want then you will. .

A:Yes. With a help of videos, books, recordings and tips from David Courtney. Definetely. I live in Finland and it's not a problem for me.

A: The technical stuff takes some time. I've played a little bit more than one year and I am able to play tabla solo for any tal. I can play easy relas with metronome beat 115 8 beats per matra quite clean and my technic is improving all the time. I do practice a lot! I know within three four years my technic will be very good. It takes just patience.
