What note do you tune your dayan too? Jul 24, 2001 04:24 a.m.

I am wondering what the diameter of all you tabla players dayans are and what pitch you tune to? Using the Na stroke to tune.

Also I have a question about the Bayan. Is it a matter of preference that you tune the pitch? Ive heard the lowest pitch of bayan range from extremly low to fairly high. But all the Bayans look like they have about the same size head. What do you tune your Bayan to?

Hi, normally when i am playing tabla, i play with a garba group or bhajan group. normally they are singing in C# or D#, so that's wat i tune to there. but in my family, my dad is the main tabla player. it really depends on weather ur playing with group or on ur own. when i am playing keyboard with my band, i get the tabla and dholak players to tune to D, or if i am playing sitar, i get them to tune to C#, D, or D#, all depending on wat i tune my sitar to. but if ur playing individually, and practicing, then try out different pitches. try a few, and which eva pitch sounds the best on ur dayan. i hope that helped.

The dayan is tuned to the frequency of the instrument you are accompanying. When playing solo B or C is desirable in order to have a soothing sound on the loudspeaker. But whilst practising the most desirable scale according to old gurus is G or G#.If you have a dayan of diameter approx. 5.5 to 6 inches(acc. to your hand size) it gives you a rich sound with sustaining resonance(somewhat like the mridang).Try using the Tin stroke to tune.

Utpal -- Is that the G or G# below or above?
(I assume you mean below.)
