Howdy folks!

Does anyone in the forum know where to get information on Vilayat Khans touring schedule?
there is somethings you just want to catch with your boots on. . for me this is one of the things. When i search the net i cant even find an official Web site for Vilayatji. There is some info on the big guy out there, but the web is swarmed with info on this Shankar guy and i have to accept that but still its a big pill to swallow. Anyone with any reliable info on the great Khan? (never mind the spelling!)

Thanks a lot. .

Really good question. I've looked for that one before myself with no luck. Ustadji does not advertise himself, but his disciples should! I would go. .

I also would be very interested, even as a person who heads in the direction of Dhrupad, how can you not like Ustad's style. I have been told when I play sitar (remember I am an ex. sitarist, currently vocalist and beenkar) that I sound a lot like him because I meend a lot more than I fret notes. Plus he is one of the few living sitarist who doesn't care for the spotlight too much, and I really admire that.

Hey. . I may be able to help, I can ask an old friend who is a student of Vilayat's son Shujaat and I figure he would probably know where to find this information. Apparently it was Khansahib's birthday recently as my friend went to the celebration in New York. I am very excited also because Vilayat's nephew, Nishat Khan (son of Imrat Khan) will be teaching at UCLA this next year and it is my last year there so I'm hoping to take the most from it I possibly can. It's so unfortunate more people aren't aware of the ethnomusicology program at my school, you can enroll in any ensemble with no prior experience whatsoever. I know I should practice for a while on the school's crappy sitars but I can't wait to get one of my own, it's all I can think about lately. .

Yes Swansong, please ask : )

Having Nishat Khan at school sounds like a dream, or any sitar teacher. . i guess there are some benefits living "over there" after all : )

I can try and find out Vilayat Khansahib's schedule from his nephew Irshad. Wasn't someone on this forum Shafaatullah Khan's student? Maybe they can help out.

Swansong: If you don't mind, could you email me your email address? I'd like to talk to you about the UCLA courses. - K.K.

Im trying again.
I got some feedback the last time, but no one seem to be able to give any info about Ustad Vilayat Khans touring.

I am searching the net without any luck.

So again ill have to ask you guys out there with Khan connection. Is it possible for anyone to get som info about this?

As i read in the Hiren Roy topic. Jeff Lewis is sometimes doing his Jawari, i guess somebody must talk to the guy.
He isnt just appearing out of thin air to give a conset on a totaly random basis. Or? i might as well just sit down and wait for him to materialize in my livingroom

If I remember right a disciple of his named David Whetstone, would probably be able to give you that information. I don't know him well anymore, but I am assuming someone on the forum does.

I asked Shafaatji about Vilayat Khan's touring schedule and he said that he doesn't tour that much anymore, but would let me know if he is planning an outting.

I saw somewhere that he lives at Princeton. Is he a professor there? I wonder if he does public concerts at the school? It would certainly be worth it to me to make a quick trip down to watch him perform if it fits my schedule the next time I'm up that way. . .

Well, for me the only option to catch a performance is if its in Europe. And then not to far away from Norway : )

Sooner or later something is going to turn up, im quite sure. To kill time waiting for it, ill just practice my sitar : )

thanks

You can likely find out by contacting AHIRI institute in New York City. Khan Sahib just did a fabulous concert at Avery Fisher Hall two weeks ago to benefit AHIRI, a school that is run under the auspices of Shujat Khan along with Debashish Bhattacharya and many other terrific musicians. They are at:
www.AHIRI.org
The "Old Man" was BTW - terrific. When he sang a song at the end in Bhairavi - there were literally tears all over the place. He can barely get up without Zakir-ji helping him, but his playing was vibrant and in no way tenous. He sounded mature - but not "old".

Jan,
I know Jeff Lewis a little, he lives near me. Doesn't do email, etc. and he wasn't at the Wasifuddin Dagar concert either which was surprising, I'll ask next time I see him. . .
