For a long time there has been a running debate concerning the difference or equivalence of Yaman, Kalyan and Yaman- Kalyan. Such arguments are often acrimonious and invariably dependent upon arcane elements of the structure of the rag. If the vidwaans of Indian music are unable to reach a consensus as to whether these are distinct rags or not, then the filmwalas with their freer interpretations cannot be held responsible for maintaining any distinction.
