Can someone explain me clearly what is an arangetram? I have read about it in one of the dance links, but couldn't find out what it really is. It seems to be an important event in dancer's life. Thank you.

An Arangetram may be seen as a graduation. It marks then end of ones apprenticship and the start of ones proffesional carreer. In the United States however, the vast majority of girls have no intention to dance profesionally. Therfore in the US it has several social functions.

1) It is a giant potlach by which the family can show off their prestige.

2) It is a good event to pad the girls CV to make it easier to get into a good college.

3) It makes it easier to annonce to the community that this girl is marriagable and enhances the girls "blue book" value in the marriage market
