great book May 17, 2004 07:22 a.m.

I want to mention a great book that I have for some time now. It is called Sitar Technique in Nibaddh Forms. It is a University thesis written by a western student of Ravi Shankar Stephen Slawek. It a more historical and analytical aproach to the sitar technique, composition, development and teaching process. There are some written examples of exercises and compositions in the book and he has even written out an entire Ravi Shankar performance in western notation, so you can see exactly what he plays!
It is not so much a teaching method but it gives you very much background information. It is the best book on sitar I know. It is 230 pages.
I don't know where you can order it. I have copied mine from the library.

Hi barend & sitar friends,

Do you mean the University thesis of Stephen Slawek was published as a book? If so, there must be the name of the editor inside. Than any library store can contact the editor to place an order if there is any left, right?

I'm a western composer, arranger and would be interested in Mr Slawek's analytical aproach to the sitar technique, composition, development and examples of exercises and compositions.

A Raga performed by Ravi Shankar entirely written in western notation, I have to see that; especially if that performance is recorded. Cause you can learn a lot by following on paper while listening to the performance. What Raga was he playing?

I write my sitar parts in western notation. So it would be interesting to see how Mr Slawek came about creating new symbols to note some of the sitar embellishments.

Hi Dan,

The book is published by Mortilal Banarsidass, ISBN: 81-208-0200-4, it is written in 1987.
The raga is rag rasiya (vilambit and drut gat)from the LP "Two raga moods" , I don't know if this LP is also on CD. I don't have the recording. If anyone knows this or has the recording please let me know!!!
