Just got signed up on this site, looks great and very informative. So, I have a question.
Where would you buy a sitar from if you were going to purchase one right now? I don't want a student model but a better, or higher, grade instrument that will be with me for a while.
Any advice or suggestions from everyone will be appreciated. Thanks. Steve

Hey tat2steve,
have a look at www.sitarsetc.com . I just ordered a calcutta traditional from Lars. Matt is right about service from him, you won't get that level of service anywhere.

But call everyone, research everything to make sure.
It is best if you can play them first, but it is next to that if they will play it over the phone for you.

Speak with Lars at sitarsetc.com That's what I did after doing internet research, talking to a couple of other sitar players and looking on eBay (yikes!!!). I couldn't be happier. I was looking for my first sitar and wanted something good.
- I gotta find the time to post all the details (including the unexpected OM) but I'm to busy playing music!

Buckingham also has some nice stuff. Just thought I had to give them a mention.

Try aacm.org I just bought a sitar from them and I would say their knowledge about the instruments and ability to do a proper set up is second to none. They also have the most choice of different brands that I could find. Because they are associated with Ali Akbar Khan I would assume the suppliers would try to give them their best stuff.

But definitely shop around, call everyone and try to get a feel for yourself.
