Does anyone know of any sitar instructors in the Orlando, Deland, or central Florida area? any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm a long time guitar player and recently purchased my first sitar and am greatly interested in learning more about it.
Im basically in the same boat your in, long time quitar player who's really interested in indian classical music. . I picked up a sitar pretty resently up here in New York and am planning on bringing it with me when i move down to Gainsville (florida). . .there are a few sites that have been brought up in topics in this forum that list sitar and tabla teachers all over the country, I was suprised to see that there where quite a few in that vensinity. .check out the older topics where people were talking about looking for sitar teachers I'm sure you'll find a bunch. . .
i typed out basically the whole story in a topic on the first of the year check it out. .but as for ICM shops in New York City there are two that I know about. . .One is called the Music Inn its located on W4th street and 6th ave which is right next too Bleeker St. in Greenwitch Village and the other is called Keshav Music Imports on 67th st and is run by someone who is constanly on this site and he is very helpful. . .let me know how it goes. .but be sure not to be pressured into buying anything by the guy in the music inn that place has been there since the sixties and is very well know with the beatles and rolling stones among hundreads of others. The guy there plays the sarod and was taught a bunch of sitar stuff by the great Ravi Shankar himself when he was working on his personal sitars (doing Jawari work and stuff like that). i took a few lessons from him but it was kinda pricey and couldnt afford it after a while. .let me know how it goes.
Actually the topic with the story on how i got my sitar was posted on the 13th of january check it out. . .and i didnt mean to say that the guy was shady in anyway at the music inn he just wants too know how much money your gonna spend as soon as you walk in its kind of a weird vibe. .you'll see what im talking about if you go over there. . .by the way is there anyone else in the new york city area that plays sitar or does shows or anything i can check out?. . .peace and love

All four host or post announcements for Indian music and dance in the
NY, NJ area. Things are kinda quiet on the concert scene just now.
Tho all these organizations work with top guys - I always pay special
attentions to those by Ahiri. Some of their concerts are done in-house at the center, which is really great because they are sparsely attended by sometimes as few as 25 people and all the great musicians in town attend in casual dress and are very accessable to their admirers (like me)
BTW - T.P. the address for KMI is 67 East 4th street. Come by and take tea.
I believe Roop Verma travels to Florida? He has a friend and longtime student there close by I think. Email him, his website is http://www.roopverma.com
Good luck and have fun!

Hey Keshav, you host some sweet recitals yourself. Thank you for doing so.
If anybody comes to NYC, do some sightseeing in the Village and do stop by Keshav's.
peace love & light
