Teachers Directory - Assistance If You Can Oct 17, 2003 07:08 p.m.

Hello To All Musicians,
My new site has gone up and it now contains
a 34 state listing of teachers of Hindustani and Carnatic music teachers. I am trying to create the most comprehensive listing possible. I expect that in putting together this listing - mistakes will have been made. Also there may be contact info that may not be up to date. Also there may be teachers who should be listed, but are not. Any feedback to help make this listing accurate and complete will greatly appreciated. The address is
http://www.keshav-music.com/teachers.htm

Hello Jeff,
Someone was kind enough to suggest AHIRI Institute which has not yet been added to the listing. AHIRI, while NY based, is headed up by Vilayat Khan and Shujat Khan, who live in Princeton. If you or any other Jerseyites are looking for a teacher in New Jersey I suggest you contact them via their website: www.ahiri.org While the teacher page was just added to my site (which is intended for ALL variety of musicians) I have been able in the past, to refer many people to teachers using this list. Many folks who are looking for teachers of a specific instrument, have found them by calling teachers from the list and asking them if they know someone nearby who teaches the form they are interested in. People are quite generous about referring students to other teachers. It's quite traditional to think of finding a teacher as a quest. The harder you have to work to find one, the more you appreciate it when you do.

Interesting. . So Prabhu and Keshav are one and the same. That explains a few things.

Dear Bruce,
Your assumption is wrong. Prabhu is not me and visa-versa. There are numerous websites that have teacher listings (including this site) I am not Prabhu any more than David and Chandra are. I have had 6 different people ask to copy the teachers directory and I have to assume Prabhu is one of those people. He mentions AHIRI. I have known about AHIRI for some time. They are right around the corner from me in New York City. If you are at my site - you will note they are not listed. I in fact have a good relationship with them - but for obvious reasons - don't list them on my site, nor would I go out of my way to promote them in this forum. If you find a site with teachers listings that includes AHIRI I expect you will know who Prabhu is.

Dear Billy,
Thanks for your post. I don't take a constructive
suggestion as a critique. Your suggestion is appreciated.
I will have to take a look at it and consider a way to reformat
it to make it easier to scan. I suspect it may have to do with
my software being Mac oriented. Some things that look
great on a Mac, don't always look so good on IBM compatibles.
I'm crazy busy at the shop and don't expect to get to it anytime
soon.
Thanks,
Keshav Das

Bruce,

good observation. They're both one and the same. Browse this forum. you will see posts from keshav/prabhu all over the place and they are an echo of each. and he's in denial

Have any of you people ever read a story by Philip K. Dick in which a bunch of people are talking about how bad off a person in a hospital is? The all sit around saying how sad it is and that there's nothing they can do to help him. It turns out in the end - that the persons who's so sick, is actually just fine. The reality is that they are all brains with no bodies floating in brine, hooked up to wires that make them think they are having a life. Ring a bell?

Hey Estivan, Remco
Verery astute, however, closer to the truth would be that Beenkarji is a figment of Ted's imagination. . .Uncle ken

As I am not you - what you say is not obvious. Why don't you list AHIRI on your teachers page? They are a respected school. What's the big mystery?

Hi - I am not Johnny, I'm Philip. I have his password:-) And an ol friend of mine, Palmer Eldritch, has a shop now: he sells nice electric
sheep with real gold covered kuntis (muslim style). And beware, there is that other guy, Timothy Archer, who has Palmers password and posts under his name, Gangstapandit. That is somebody else than him and me. And Johnny.
And he only sells awful acoustic androids.
Another warning: these people who use Pyramid strings are Illuminati. (see also: Excerpts from the last words of Ustad Schulz.)

This is such a dead issue. I've stated what I stated and I can't be bothered to address the taunts of a few sophmoric conspiracy freeks. Anything I have posted has been done so under my own name. Anything I have to say is directed towards serious musicians and music students. As a professonal musician of over 35 years experience I can't really be expected to be wounded by the silliness of three or four nerdy sitar hobbiests who probably live in their mother's basement. Theres an old Indian saying that goes: "Where elephants walk, dogs bark". While some will spend their time barking, others will be busy exchanging interesting ideas with mature open-minded musicians.

Re:Teachers Directory - Assistance If You Can Nov 14, 2003 10:31 a.m.

Keshav - lighten up. There is a lot of barking: musical barking, business barking etc. If you can't stand or understand irony, you are maybe the kind of Elephant that is offered to the sea.

If you ever happen to visit southern Germany, please come to my basement for some chai. It's in the fifth story. There you will also meet my mothers, including Jimmy Carl Black, the Indian of the group, and even Suzie Creamcheese.

I'd love to take you up on your invitation. Let me also extend the same invitation to yourself and any musicians that visit NYC. My shop is much more than a business. Many fine players come by to sit on the musician's tucket and hang out and drink chai. We try to serve as a center for exchanging info (and gossip) about the music scene. We also have inexpensive, informal concerts, with 90% of the door going to the musicians. Vasant Rai's son Ani will be playing a sarod concert at our place in the near future. So do drop in when you are in N.Y.
Peace,
