Ustad Imrat Khan performing 10/4 in Los Angeles! Sep 30, 2003 07:19 p.m.

Hey all. . I just had my first lesson (nerves!) and lunch with Nishat Khansahib, and he is a very kind and friendly man so I am very excited. He informed me that his father Imrat Khansahib and a persian santoor player will be performing at the Japanese Cultural Center in downtown LA, I'll post the details tomorrow when I find out more. Hey KK now I can finally attach a face to the twisted humor. .

The only thing that sucks is there is assigned seating, prices ranging from $25 for rear balcony to $55 up front, ouch. The thing is this is a "fusion" concert so all the artists will play individually then there will be a big finale, though of course I would rather not hear Khansahib's sitar drowned out by other instruments. Go to www.santur.com for details. . Ustad Nishat Khan may also be performing next week, I'll let y'all know when I see him tomorrow.

This was an excellent concert, the santur player and imrat khan were amazing and really seemed to enjoy challenging each other. The percussionists were all flawless as well. Unfortunately some moron in the balcony thought he would be cute and started whistling during Imrat Khan's alap, and it got so bad that he abruptly stopped playing and told the man to either come out of the shadows onto the stage or to go home. I really couldn't believe how rude this guy was, he was also apparently drinking a flask in the concert hall. About a minute later Imrat Khan broke his ma string and had to change it, so they skipped the alap jor and went straight to the gat after shafatullah played a solo to pass the dead time. I have never heard a sitarist start without an alap and so it sounded strange and kind of rough at first but they ended well. The grand finale with all the performers simultaneously was thrilling, the Persian and Indian ensembles worked well with each other and they even duelled for a bit, what extreme virtuosity!

LOL, imagine some drunk whistling to the alap! I would have lost it for sure. Kind of like struggling with a chip bag at the movie theatre. His son's concert was great, 4 hours at only $15. However, I would gladly pay for IK anyday. Hope he comes up this way. I always wondered if anyone ever broke a string playing. .

I broke a string when i tuned up to D. I went for a rally deep meend and it broke, in a different way that a guitar string does. Mouch more power in the string, i feelt it on my right hand for some hours after.

With a desturbing alcohol stained whisteling experience i guess most of us would break a string. I guess it cleared the air a bit. .

Have seen/heard Ravi Shankar break a string. Ali Akbar Khan did as well. Recently Shahid broke one in Austin. Professionals usually take care to change strings often. So dont know what causes there minor interruptions. But it gives the tabla players and excuse. .to hmm I wont go into it.
