Dhun style Aug 01, 2003 01:38 p.m.

I have recently heard recording from Ravi Shankar and also from Vilayat Khan where they play certain raga in Dhun style.

Eg Ravi Shankar played a Bangla Dhun piece.

It sounds very natural almost as if the Sitar was singing a melody.

Does anyone know if this is played any differently than a regular raga piece?

My understanding is that a Dhun is based more on a folk tune than a classical raga and doesn't adhere to as strict rules when pefrormed.---Neal

My understanding is that Bangla Dhun was essentially written by Raviji for the occasion. It was based on a simple folk melody or bajan from Bangla Desh; therefore, it never was a "regular raga". My favorite has always been the Dhun from the 1967 Monterrey Pop. It was based on Rag Panchamse Ghara. I heard this one again in person in Tuscon Az in late 2000. Still mesmerizing!
