I am learning raag yaman and the one curious thing is that every where I read about this raag on line, it is said that P is not allowed in the aroha. However, my instructor includes it. Being a good student :-) I do as I am told. I don't want to break my first raag.
Did anyone else learn it this way? Comments welcom.
Some use it and others don't, either way is correct. I was taught to use it but have friends from western India who do not. Middle SA is not used in Aroha unless it is the starting point. . . .
Yaman and Yaman Kalyan (uses shuddha Ma), are slightly different. However, these days Pa in aroha or avroha is accepted by most. In older/pure forms of yaman pa is not used in aroha. Another case of raag changing in time. Look for some paltas in Yaman/Yaman Kalyan in RS's book/
I'm learning Yaman as well, with no Pa in the aroha. An exercise my teacher taught me is to start on Ni just below middle Sa, and do the following (Ma is sharp, of course):
N R S
N R G R S
N R G M G R S
N R G M D P M G R S
N R G M D N D P M G R S
N R G M D N S N D P M G R S
Then work your way back down. It's fun to do with a chikari stroke between notes as well.
"My Music My Life" is out of print but you can find copies on eBay regularly. I picked up a hardback, former library edition there for $20.
I have seen several folks post that they are not having any luck in finding a copy of "My Music, My Life". So here, once again, is a source: http://www.bpagency.com/result.asp?From=6&To=15&BkId=85534&SrchLoc=1 The price is $10. I have ordered from these guys before. Sometimes they have it, sometimes they don't.
