Fingering question Apr 03, 2003 11:20 a.m.

I am working on raga Adana. The following passage occurs on multiple occasions:

n S R M P N P

(Lower case = lower octave; ni is flat)

It needs to be played pretty quickly. I'm curious about how other players would finger this. Thanks in advance!

Hello. . .
1-1-1-1-1-2-1 would be the fingering in the style in which I was taught. 1 is index, 2 is third finger. . . .

Lars -- When you say 2 is the third finger I am assuming you mean the ring finger (the one next to the pinkie)?

If so, does that mean the stretch from Re to Ma is considered too long for the middle finger?

Well. . . . .no, I'm calling the middle finger the 3rd. . .when you ascend, you always use the index finger until you hit the final highest note which you use your middle finger for and start descending again with the index. Some use the 3rd finger, or 1-2, 1-2, on up. . .it varies but this is the way I was taught. .Maihar Gharana style.
