Shipping Sitar from India Mar 25, 2003 06:16 p.m.

I am thinking of ordering a Sitar directly from India from say Manoj Kumar Sardar or Hiren Roy.

Has anyone done this before and can give some advise on how to do this?

The other option is to buy from stores here ie Silverbush, Ali Akbar store etc. Any comments?

Hello. . .
If ordering from India on your own, from Manoj or Hiren Roy there will be a $250 to $300 shipping charge most likely. If you are unhappy with it then you will have to send it back and wait, wire fees, etc. I don't recommend it unless you have someone picking it out for you as you will most likely end up with an 'export quality' instrument. . .

I do agree with Lars, but if you want to do it then go for a Glassfiber case for your instrument, Then you will get it in one pice whatever quality of instrument you get. .

How does shops like yours sitar setc, silverbush etc get their Sitars from these makers, does someone pick them out for you?

I am assuming that a Sitar by Manoj Kumar or Hiren Roy will be of good quality whichever one they ship? Any comments?

I understand the pain of having to ship back if there are problems etc. I prefer to pick one myself after checking the Sitar for cracks etc but unfortunately I dont have anyone in India that can buy it for me.

DM. . . . .some places buy wholesale sitars (like Radha Krishna Sharma) from an importer in the US, others have them shipped from India and use an agent to handle it. If you want to know more about my own instruments then it would be better talked about by email. . .Take you time and ask around before ordering from India and if you do, like Jan said. . .get a fiberglass case to decrease the possibility of getting shipping damage. . . . .
