It's about 15 years that I didn't meet a sitar teacher. I didn't play all that period either. . and there is no sitar teacher that I know of in Quebec city. I have restarted practicing since a few months. Now I'm starting the meends exercises given by my old teacher that I lost track of in time.
:-) During a meend, does the wrist bend over using the thumb as a "point d'appuis" in french, like the stable post of a leverage, in other words. Or it is only the fingers folding inwards the hand pulling the string along with them?
Didn't see the other post. Only for the right hand (right handed players) do you use the thumb as a lever. Pulling the meend is done by closing the fingers of the left hand only. Thumb not involved.
The important aspact of meend is to use wrist motion as much as possible. If you are pulling from re to ma or re to pa the sound gets heavier and most of the work should be done by your fingers and wrist not by your shoulder. Thumb is just there to support the motion of wrist and fingers. So overall the first two fingers and wrist should be given priority and thumb will follow along. I am just a student, hope this helps.
