I'm trying to put a little variety into my sitar CD collection. There doesn't appear to be many female sitarists out there that are recorded. Bought a CD by Hasu Patel and Suman Sharma. Any of you ever heard either, and what do you think of their styles? I have definite opinions already, but I don't want to say just yet. . .
Other than Anoushka Shankar, what other female sitarists have you heard that you all can recommend?
Hey Remco, I hear she is good . . . try to sneak a MD recorder in with you :-)
I hear Mita Nag is excellent as well, anxiously awaiting her new CD from Raga.com but not much progress with it from what I hear so it will be awhile . . . . .
I'm still trying to get my hands on a recording of Annapurna Devi (remember, it is said that she is the one who absorbed 75% of what Baba taught her, her brother, Ali Akbar Khan, took in about 50%, and Ravi Shankar only made it through Ustad Khan's training retaining 25%). Although she would be labled as a practitioner of the surbahar, the above statement leeds me to believe that she would be very highly rated when speaking of women that are ICM instrumentalist. I think someone had said on this forum that the had a leed on her recordings (of which I believe there are only 2-3).
