Search for sitar teacher Aug 25, 2002 06:36 a.m.

Hi!

I live in the north London area and I'm looking for a sitar teacher in the same vicinity. Is anyone out there? If so, I'm really interested in learning the sitar (I must warn you now that my musical knowledge is virtually nil but I'm very keen to learn!) Please get in touch. Thanks and look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Muneet,
Welcome to the board! Here is a link to John Perkins who is near you in England I think:
http://www.sitar.co.uk
The page takes awhile to load so be patient.
Also there is a fellow named Jerry who posts once in awhile and he also lives in England. You should have no problems finding a teacher in and around London.
Do you have a sitar? If not, then choose one very carefully as the quality of instrument will make a world of difference between 'good' practice and 'not so good'. . .I have some material I can email you to start practicing with if you like.

Hi Lars!

Thanx for replying to me! I tried John Perkins but he lives quite far from me. I don't have a sitar yet. My plan is to find a teacher and see if the sitar likes me and then I'll get a sitar. Thanx for the advice on quality - I will keep it in mind. Yeah, please mail me any info you have on getting started on the sitar, I'd love to study it. Have you checked out www.buckinghammusic.com? There's a tutorial on that site too which was quite good although without a sitar it was a bit tricky to follow. How long have you been playing? You seem to know your stuff. Anywayz, thanx for your help!
