I'm in the process of putting all my lesson in QuarkXpress and have some questions regarding notation. Is there a standard on how to write down the komal & tivra signs. I know Ravi Shankar uses the vertical stripe above the note for tivra and a line under the note for komal, but looks a bit dorky especially when you play in the high octave (it needs a line PLUS a dot). Ali Akbar Khan uses the Capital and lowercase lettering which I find very confusing (Every natural note Capital exept the Ma). Any suggestions other options?
So as not to have dots and over/underscores mixed, you would use the lower case letter for komal and tivre notation. There are quite a few different ways of doing this but this seems to be the most common and makes the most sense. You could go all the way and use only the devangari annotation. If you need the fonts, you might try this site: http://www.indianlanguages.com/
If this is no help, I have been developing a font for this kind of thing and could maybe help you out in this arena.
I'm glad somebody brought this up! I guess I've seen a half-dozen or more different ways of writing sargam notation. I haven't seen evidence for univeral agreement or a standard for writing Indian sargam. Didn't need this . . .until now.
