I just read about a melodic device called the tia. According tot he author it's a string of three identical 3-note figures that can begin on any beat, but must end on beat number one. (such as GA MA PA-GA MA PA-GA MA PA) However, he did not say when they are used. Does anyone know?
OK, I'm just speculating here, but I wonder if its just a short variation on a tehai, which is also 3 cycles long, ending on the sam? Only thing is, the tehai usually ends the piece.
