Sitar and ". . ."? Apr 16, 2002 10:56 p.m.

I was listening the other day to a Beethoven CD of - Sonatas for violin and piano- and got to thinking what other instrument might compliment the sitar? Ravi played with Yehudi Menuhin (violin) on "East Meets West" to fairly positive reviews.

So heres my question. .If you could duet with one other instrument, what would it be. What might work and gel together? What would not gel very well with the sitar?

I think I'd like to try it with the cello. I think the alaap could be amazing with the deep, sonorous qualities of the cello complimenting the deeper sounds of an alaap. The chikaris then would add a nice contrast of sonics. Just a thought. Let's hear some others. .

Hmmm, how 'bout a synthesizer? Completely tunable and no ego either!

Yeah, interesting idea. Along with synthesizer backfills, I think virtually any string or woodwind would be fine as well. I've heard jazz fusion with saxophone and sitar, but I didn't like it much. Plus, a few folks know I don't like to hear a mix of sitar and "hard" rock. Doesn't work for me. One interesting thought that Ken and I agree on is a mix of sitar with Irish harp or woodwinds. We both hear a surprising agreement between raga form and celtic ballads. I'd like to hear someone do that one sometime. .
