Being new to tabla i have just heard shawn a few months back. his sound is very good. just wondering where he ranks compared to Zakir and Anindo. I have not heard them live but i am sure that Mr. Mativetsky is at the least in the same league Thoughts?

Hi all,
Ron, I really hope you're joking. . firstly, the question of "who's better" in tabla is a question that comes up often, but that really has no answer because it's a matter of personal taste, style, etc. .
But in this case, I can definitely say that Zakirji and Anindoji are better tabla players than me! Though, they play different styles, they're both years (many!) ahead of me in practice and experience. I can only hope to one day reach their level of playing. I have to say that I'm a bit disturbed that you would even use my name in the same sentence as these two other players. These are two masters of tabla playing and I'm still very much a student. (Though I do teach and play professionally in Montreal.) I thank you for the compliment to my playing, but I really do not deserve to be compared to these master players.
I just want to note, however, that while I think that both are great tabla players, neither are my role models for tabla playing. That would have to be my Guruji - Pandit Sharda Sahai-ji of the Benares gharana.
