Hi, I'm new to the forum and relitively new to tabla. Could someone please suggest an excercise which would benefit the speed and clarity of my double, or multiple 'naa'? Plus, there is a bol I'm not familiar with, I've heard Zakir Hussain and Talvin Singh perform it - it sounds as if they're flicking the first three fingers down on the syahi in rapid succession. . Plus, what does anyone here think of Talvin Singh as a tabla player? He doesn't seem to be discussed much. Thanks,
Jimmyx

Jimmy,
Scroll down the recent threads to Feb. 27, look for 'Roopak' and "Fast Double "Na".
You're right, Talvin Singh doesn't get talked about much as a tabla player. Have you heard Vira? It's the only one I've got - i'd love to know of any other albums of his you know of - tabla albums, not his electronica stuff. I think he's amazing. Very sensative, and destinctive. The pure quality of the sounds he makes is exceptional. I don't think it works very well on his electronica stuff though. I certainly want to hear more.

Talvin Singh is an amazing person. An awesome tabla player as well. His creative mind and ideas has brought tabla to a whole new level. He is a tabla player of extremely high calibre
I've got those two albums - maybe i'll give them another listen now, i just find that the tabla is - as you said - just in the backgound and as he's so good, i'd like to hear him make the two work equally together. I like to hear space in rhythmic music, especially tabla so you can appreciate the sounds, but he fills the space, so theres no contrast. i like it in a way though. I thought tabla beats science was a great idea but not very successful. but i heard a little of a live album of theirs which i loved - it had the space i was talking about. Vira is brilliant - try and get hold of it. it's a classical album with Rakesh Chaurasia on flute (thats not it's real name, but its like a wooden flute). Take it easy. good luck with tabla.
