My old tabla unfortunately was broken, so now I have the task of buying a new tabla. My friend was suggesting that I buy one of those new tablas, made out of metal that you can tune w/ a wrench. Does anyone have any experience w/ these and how do they compare w/ traditionally made tablas? In essence, which type of tabla should I buy out of all the available styles? Also, I'm located in New Jersey, so if I can obtain the tabla in the area, that would be great.

Located in Nutley, NJ. You could probably arrange to pick up a tabla or take yours there for repair and avoid shipping. Click on the email link - <contact us>.
Never tried a metal dayan before. Might be "interesting" but unlikely to satisfy the need to hear a "real" dayan sound. If you are close to NYC - try this link. These guys do first class reheading with Calcutta skins with a short turnaround. They are also about 20% cheaper than the people in Nutley. http://www.keshav-music.com/
Good luck whatever you decide, and hey if you buy a metal dayan, please post your opinion. Let folks know if you like it.
